On June 20, 2018, Councilmembers Marci Overstreet (CD 11) and Matt Westmoreland (Post 2 At-Large) joined Renew Atlanta/TSPLOST Horizontal Program Management Officer, Michele Wynn, and community members to break ground on the Childress Drive Bridge project.
The bridge runs over South Utoy Creek and has been a staple in the District 11 community for approximately 80 years. It is being replaced to improve safety for all users. The bridge has undergone significant deterioration, and has neared the end of its life expectancy. Construction for the bridge started summer 2018 and will re-open to traffic and pedestrians in the summer of 2019. The Childress Drive Bridge is the first bridge project to begin construction for the Renew Atlanta and TSPLOST programs.
“The replacement of the Childress Bridge promises to correct one of the highest priority bridges in our network. At the same time, it will deliver benefits to the public by the addition of sidewalks to create a much safer pedestrian environment. Both are key goals of the Renew Atlanta Program,” said Renew Atlanta/TSPLOST Interim General Manager, Tom Weyandt.
